Massage Therapy For People With Cerebral Palsy

What Is Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a lifelong condition that affects movement, muscle tone, and posture. It’s caused by damage to the developing brain, usually before, during, or shortly after birth. Everyone’s experience of CP is different – some people live with tight or rigid muscles, others experience involuntary movements or balance challenges. Many also navigate fatigue, joint discomfort, or changes in coordination day to day.

Massage therapy isn’t a cure for cerebral palsy, but it can offer comfort, relaxation, and support for people living with the condition. Gentle, adaptive touch can ease tight muscles, support a sense of calm, and create a space where the body feels cared for – not managed or corrected.

How Can Massage Help People With Cerebral Palsy?

Massage may support people with CP by:

  • Easing muscle tightness or spasms
  • Encouraging relaxation and body awareness
  • Supporting mobility and comfort in joints
  • Helping manage stress, fatigue, or overwhelm
  • Providing gentle sensory input in a safe, respectful way

We work with children, young people, and adults with cerebral palsy. Sessions are tailored to the individual – taking into account positioning, communication needs, sensory preferences, and support requirements.

A Personalised Approach

Our therapists understand that no two clients experience CP the same way. That’s why we take time to listen and adapt. Some clients may benefit from slow, calming touch to reduce tension. Others might prefer focused work around certain joints to ease movement or stiffness. Stretching, if used, is always gentle and guided by the person’s comfort.

We can work with families, carers, and healthcare teams to ensure massage fits within your wider support plan.

A Word on Medical Care

Massage is a complementary therapy – it doesn’t replace medical treatment. We always encourage clients to speak with their GP or neurologist if they’re unsure whether massage is right for them. We’re happy to work collaboratively with your wider support team where helpful.
