Massage Therapy For Amputees
Living with limb loss can come with a wide range of physical and emotional challenges – both immediately after surgery and long into the future. Massage won’t reverse these changes, but it can offer support, comfort, and relief from some of the effects.
Many amputees experience things like phantom pain, scar sensitivity, muscle tension, or changes in circulation. Our therapists are trained to adapt each session based on your specific needs—whether you’re newly adjusting to life after amputation or dealing with long-term discomfort.
Common Concerns We Support
- Phantom Sensations & Pain
Phantom pain is common after amputation and can feel sharp, burning, or twisting even though the limb is no longer there. Some people find that gentle massage around the residual limb or nearby soft tissue helps reduce the intensity or frequency of these sensations. - Residual Limb Discomfort
Pain around the amputation site can come from many sources—scar tissue, prosthetic use, tightness, or sensitivity. Massage may help ease tension, soothe irritated areas, and support better movement or comfort day-to-day. - Scar Tissue & Swelling
Surgical scarring can affect nearby tissues and mobility. With consent and care, massage may help soften tight areas and reduce stiffness. We also use gentle techniques to support lymph flow, which may help reduce swelling and discomfort. - Circulation & Sensory Changes
Where muscle use is reduced, circulation can be affected. Massage may encourage blood flow and offer sensory input that helps reconnect you to your body. Some clients feel warmer, more mobile, or more balanced after regular sessions.
A Personalised Approach
We understand that no two people have the same experience of amputation. That’s why every session starts with a conversation—about your needs, your preferences, and what support looks like for you. We’re here to listen, adapt, and offer care that respects your body, your boundaries, and your story.
A Word on Medical Care
Massage is a complementary therapy, it doesn’t replace medical treatment. We always encourage clients to speak with their GP or neurologist if they’re unsure whether massage is right for them. We’re happy to work collaboratively with your wider support team where helpful.
