Massage for People with Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Massage for people with Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Massage can be a gentle, meaningful way to connect with someone living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. It isn’t about fixing anything – it’s about offering calm, comfort, and presence in a way that meets the person where they are.

Even when memory fades or language becomes difficult, people often still respond to soothing touch, music, and familiar sensory experiences. A warm hand, soft pressure, and kind attention can go a long way.

Benefits of massage for people with dementia and alzheimer’s

Massage may help reduce:

  • Restlessness or agitation
  • Feelings of anxiety or confusion
  • Sensory overwhelm
  • Loneliness or isolation

At the same time, many people find that regular touch supports emotional wellbeing, helps ease muscle tension, and creates moments of peace.

It’s not about technique – it’s about connection. Simple gestures like a slow hand massage, calming rhythm, or gentle pressure can spark comfort even in later stages of dementia.

A Calm, Adaptable Approach

Our therapists are experienced in working with people who have cognitive changes. We adapt each session to the person’s needs on the day – some clients prefer a quiet hand massage in a familiar chair, others respond well to gentle strokes on the back or shoulders.

We’ll always move slowly, checking in through non-verbal cues like facial expression, breathing, and posture. Every person is different, and we adjust based on how they’re feeling.

Scented oils or calming music can be included if it feels supportive—but everything is optional, and comfort comes first.

It’s About Being Present

Massage isn’t just physical – it’s emotional. For people living with dementia, it can be one of the few remaining ways to feel safe, grounded, and cared for.

Whether we’re sharing quiet space or gently massaging someone’s hands, our role is to offer connection – not control.

A Word on Medical Care

Massage is a complementary therapy – it doesn’t replace medical treatment. We always encourage clients to speak with their GP or neurologist if they’re unsure whether massage is right for them. We’re happy to work collaboratively with your wider support team where helpful.

How to Book

We offer in-home visits, care home sessions, and hospital appointments where possible. We’re always happy to talk through what might feel most appropriate for your loved one.
