Massage Therapy for People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to changes in movement, sensation, energy, and coordination. No two people with MS experience it the same way—symptoms can vary widely and may include fatigue, stiffness, pain, numbness, or difficulty with mobility.

Massage doesn’t treat MS, but it can offer gentle support for some of the physical and emotional challenges that may come with it.

How Can Massage Help People with Multiple Sclerosis?

Massage therapy may support people with MS by:

  • Easing muscle tightness or tension
  • Supporting a sense of calm and relaxation
  • Encouraging better circulation and comfort in areas of reduced mobility
  • Helping manage stress, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm
  • Creating a positive, body-affirming experience of touch

Regular massage may also support sleep, mood, and body awareness – important parts of overall wellbeing for people living with MS.

A Gentle, Adapted Approach

Our therapists are trained to work with neurological conditions. Sessions are always adapted to your needs on the day—whether that means using lighter pressure, avoiding sensitive areas, or adjusting the position of the body for safety and comfort.

We take time to understand what works for you, and we welcome involvement from your wider care team if you’d like to coordinate care.

A Word on Medical Care

Massage is a complementary therapy – it doesn’t replace medical treatment. We always encourage clients to speak with their GP or neurologist if they’re unsure whether massage is right for them. We’re happy to work collaboratively with your wider support team where helpful.

Safety Considerations

Massage may not be appropriate in some cases, such as during active infections, untreated osteoporosis, or certain kinds of swelling (like oedema caused by heart or kidney conditions). We’ll talk through your medical history during your consultation to make sure massage is safe and suitable for you.

Book a Visit

We offer home and care-based appointments, and we’re always happy to talk through whether massage might be a good fit for you or someone you care for.
