Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Massage Therapy and PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. People living with PTSD may experience a range of symptoms, including anxiety, flashbacks, muscle tension, sleep difficulties, and emotional overwhelm.

Massage isn’t a treatment for PTSD, but it can offer a supportive, grounding experience that helps some people feel safer and more connected to their bodies. The calm rhythm of massage, combined with a respectful and consent-based approach, may help soothe both body and mind.

How Massage May Support People with PTSD

  1. Relief from Stress and Tension
Massage can offer a break from the constant state of alertness or anxiety many people with PTSD experience. The gentle pressure and grounding touch can help the body shift into a more relaxed state, even if only for a short time.
  2. Easing Physical Discomfort
It’s common for people with PTSD to carry stress in their bodies—especially in the form of muscle tightness, jaw clenching, or chronic pain. Massage may help soften these patterns, ease stiffness, and bring a sense of physical relief.
  3. Support for Rest and Sleep
Many people with PTSD find sleep difficult. Calming massage techniques may help settle the nervous system and promote deeper rest—something many clients appreciate.
  4. Creating a Sense of Safety
Touch, when offered slowly and with full consent, can help rebuild trust in the body. We go at your pace. You’re always in control of what happens in the session.

Trauma-Informed Care

All of our therapists understand the importance of emotional safety. We create a quiet, supportive space and work closely with you to respect boundaries, triggers, and preferences.

Whether it’s a simple hand massage or a longer full-body session, our goal is to help you feel grounded, respected, and gently supported.

A Word on Medical Care

Massage is a complementary therapy—it doesn’t replace medical treatment. We always encourage clients to speak with their GP or neurologist if they’re unsure whether massage is right for them. We’re happy to work collaboratively with your wider support team where helpful.
